Damien Kavanagh
Finance Manager
I joined GameStop in 2004 as an Accounts Assistant within the Finance Team. I had no retail background at that point as I had been lucky enough to be offered a role straight from secondary school. I went into practice straight away and for 3 years remained there. After a stint in hotel management I moved back into finance and took on the role with GameStop. My current role means that whilst I am responsible for the entire inventory of the business I also manage the finance team of 5 and report directly into the Finance Director. I believe that whilst I may have taken a different career path to my friends it has meant that whilst they are only in the early stages of their careers I have established myself and have gained much more experience in comparison.
One of the most enjoyable parts of working for GameStop is that while it is an International organisation it feels very much like a family run business. By that I mean that the Directors are all very accessible which means that your ideas are welcomed and lines of communication are direct and clear. I feel that this open door policy allows people to shine and make the role their own – all the while receiving recognition for their contribution.
I believe that any role is what you make of it and with GameStop that freedom has allowed me to look at the bigger picture of the success of the organisation. Down the road I would hope my role will remain within the finance department whilst giving me more access to the commercial side of the business. I see my career developing with GameStop as the organisation grows.
